I cant access my project because of an error message

I keep trying to open my project on Website X5 Professional and get the same error message that the project wasn't closed properly or is already in use. I can't access my files because I keep being blocked ('an error occurred while loading the project' is the message each time). Windows had shut it down previously without letting me save my work. I can't access my website now. I have tried uploading an update and it hasn't helped. What should I do?

David, I assume you may have an error in the XML file (this normally comes up as 2 numbers separated by a comma). If so it may be possible to restore a backup. Select your project in WX5, click backup and look for a suitable candidate. If you have one click redo.
Please advise if/when successful.
For future reference we recommend step 5, export project (append date to name) at the end of every editting session. This will give you an iwzip which is a bullet proof backup.

I have tried clicking on various backup copies going back right back to 2014 and I keep getting the message 'an error occurred while restoring the backup copy'. So no progress there, I'm afraid.
David, you could be in a bit of bother! WX5 v10 is very old so we cannot ask Incomeidia for assistance. Assuming you have not been successful in restoring any backups, could you open WX5, select the project and select Duplicate and then attempt to open the new copy. Even if this fails, try open WX5 as administrator (right click, run as administrator) and try open your project.
It sounds like Windows has locked a file as read only, but in a worst case scenario a required XML file (not included in backup) has been corrupted.
Please advise of your progress.
Can you provide a link to the online site? If I make further recommendations I would like to ensure I am not recommending something unreasonable.

I have tried running as administrator but it doesn't make any difference. I tried J.P's suggestion but I am afraid the net result was that files have all disappeared when I reopened Professional again. I tried importing them from the relevant folders in my computer but it no longer seems to recognise them.
I have managed to put the website back together from scratch using Evolution 10 because I had a deadline I had to meet. However it has also crashed once in the last few days (although thankfully no data was lost) and I am concerned that Windows seems to have a vendetta against these programmes. I shall be very upset if Evolution 10 also self destructs like Professional as it takes a lot of time reassembling websites from scratch. Can you suggest what the problem might be?

David, from this time forward please go to step 5, export project and create an iwzip after each session (because you are using such an old version you will need to rename/append the date to each iwzip after creation, in latest version this can be done at the time of creation).
If you rely on the built in backup you WILL loose your project again.
No versions of WX5 self destruct, instability is caused by underlying Windows or hardware issues (especially in such old and relatively stable versions which have worked reliably in the past).
Given that the version 10 you are using is so old can I assume your hardware is similarly aging? If so, I recommend you get ccleaner (free) to remove redundant temp files, I also recommend running chkdsk c: /r from an administrator DOS prompt, and if it is Win 7, defrag the HD (I use defraggler)
If you can prove to yourself that the hardware is stable then my personal recommendation is to purchase the current EVO version keeping in mind that you cannot directly upgrade or import from V10 (it must be imported into v11 or later to create an interim iwzip). Much of the functionality in V10 is not up to todays web standards and it provides no ability to create a mobile site.
