Automate addition of descriptions to gallery pictures

Is there an automated way to add descriptions to gallery pictures?
Right now I have to add them one by one and if there are lots of pictures, it gets really tedious. It would be great if there was a way to automate this or at least pull in the info found in the picture file name or in the metadata.
