Uploading site changes  en

Hi i have found this in the answers "

You can upload the pages you have created with WebSite X5 through any FTP program. A program you can use for example is FileZilla, a free software directly downloadable from the site filezilla-project.org.

To publish through an external FTP program, you must first export the site within a folder using the 'Export on disk' command in order to have the list of files ready to be transferred on to your server"

I am have trouble upoading to another sub folder on the server and the software says Destination Folder Incorrect, but this folder is wher the uploaded files are with the hosting company they will not give me any help as i am not listed as anything to do with the website holders and that i have used a third party software and not thiers, i would like to know if i used thier File manager (much like File Zilla) to upload the files into the said folder will the original files be over written? And which folder do i find all of the files to upoad to replace the files allready on the server.?

Im away for a few days so will get back on my return.

Many thanks.

Hello Colin,

I have read your post through carefully several times.

Although you might be able to 'manually' upload your WebSite X5 project files to the server using your web host's File Manager, this procedure would be fraught with difficulty if you are unsure exactly where to place the files, what to keep, what to delete, etc.  -  In short, I wouldn't recommend it.

It would be a great shame not to make use of WebSite X5's built-in FTP client in Step 5: using this ensures that all files are uploaded to the correct directories, and that any old files are overwritten with new ones, etc.

It seems to me that the following statement is key to your problem:

"I am have trouble upoading to another sub folder on the server and the software says Destination Folder Incorrect"

If we can help you set up WebSite X5 correctly (which will get rid of this error message) then everything will go a LOT smoother for you.

If you have FTP access to your server (which you seem to have) then there is not really any reason why we shouldn't be able to sort this for you.

You would have to be willing to share a few details with us:

1. The domain name of your website (the URL)

2. The name of your web host

3. A screenshot of your FTP details in Step 5 (don't worry, your password is obscured by WebSite X5)

We will understand if you would rather not share this information with us, for whatever reason.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the information.  I am going to attach several screenshots to illustrate how to set up WebSite X5 to upload a project into the root folder, using the FTP credentials you kindly supplied.  I'll discuss uploading to a sub-folder shortly.

First, set the domain name in Step 1 of WebSite X5, as per this first screenshot.

Next, enter the FTP credentials in Step 5...  leave the 'Destination folder' field blank...

Having set the correct FTP details you can then click 'Next' in WebSite X5, which will take you to a screen showing the current files and folders on the server, in root.

It's important to realise that at this point pressing 'Start' will begin uploading WebSite X5 project files to the server, overwriting any which have the same name.  As there is an existing website in the root folder at present this would not be a good idea.

You have to make a decision: either delete all existing files on the server and continue with the upload, or go back a step in WebSite X5 and set a 'Destination folder', which is in effect the sub-folder you referred to earlier.

However, if you decide to upload your WebSite X5 project into a sub-folder on the server, then you must also change the URL of your website in Step 1.  In effect the domain name for your new site will be as follows:

http://www.themultisportsclub.com/new-website-name

...and the index file for the new site will be found at the following URL:

http://www.themultisportsclub.com/new-website-name/index.html

If you set things up in this way then everything should work...  however, for obvious reasons it would be more ideal to delete the original site and replace it with the new one.

I strongly advise you to change your FTP password and webhost password as soon as practically possible, given that they have been uploaded to a public forum.  Many thanks for providing temporary access though.

Please let us know if there are still any unresolved issues.

Many thanks!

Paul

PS: I've created a subfolder called 'Newpages' on your server, and attach a screenshot.  If you don't wish to use it then you can of course simply delete it.  However, if you did want to upload into this new folder then the 'Destination folder' in Step 5 would be:

/Newpages

...and the Website Address (URL) in Step 1 would be:

http://www.themultisportsclub.com/Newpages

Thankyou Paul will give this a go. Can the new sub folder be created in the sub folder that has the uploaded files in or does it have to be in /htdocs folder, i would prefer to upload the new site and be sure its working before i delete the old one.

Yes, you can create a new folder amongst the files which are already present on the server...  it will not interfere with them in any way, as long as you definitely amend the 'Destination folder' and 'Website Address' like I described in my previous post.
