I've had this problem before but can't for the life of me remember how it was resolved.
I previewed a website and all worked fine. Not having used X5 for a little while I was clicking along the top row of options to remind myself what they do, when I clicked on the far right - different browser option. As soon as I did that my preview screen went blank.
Not only do I not have anything showing on the preview screen, the pages that I know have content are showing as empty.
I've shut down X5 and rebooted the laptop but no joy.
Any suggestions kind folk as to how I fix this one? After a few blips I'm all keen to get cracking but can't.

Carolyn, when you do the internal preview do you see your website?
When you click preview with default browser it may be selecting the wrong browser (ie is no longer acceptable), try click the down arrow and select which browser you would prefer to use.
If there are still any issues, hold down ctrl when pressing preview, and then when you open your website in your preferred browser, CTRL+F5 to flush the browser cache.

I tried the CTRL+F5, but that only brought up the laptop's brightness contol (at max).
Also tried the CTRL when pressing preview - that comes up with the X5 symbol in the middle of the screen, then a green bar goes across the top (left to right), then nothing. The page remains as:

The above is the same that appears irrespective of whether any browser is selected under the top right button.
Note: If I'd remembered that the 'browser option' has always had this issue (for me, irrespective of which laptop) then I wouldn't have touched it and would've had the normal preview and all would have been well.

In addition, now it's doing this, every page I go into is blank, even though there is text/images in there.

But if I click on a box, even though the wee preview box in the bottom righthand corner of the screen above shows words, I get this:
Carolyn, before resorting to more drastic solutions could you start a new project and see if the same thing happens?
Also, could you check that you are not running any third party protection (antivirus/firewall/vpn/malware) and if so temporarily disable or uninstall?
Carolyn, another cause could be if your project is being synchronised be onedrive or similar. The project should be local and not synchronised/backed up while you are working with it.

Finally got to try the suggested fixes:
Does this mean I have to change my anti-virus protection? And if yes, what are the options?
You have empty cells both to the left and right.
Either let the existing text-objects fill the empty cells or make new "empty" objects in the empty cells to the right and to the left for the existing text-objects.
Carolyn, what anti virus software are you using? Is it paid for or a freeby? You should be able to stop "protection" of a whole directory structure.
i just use win10 built in protection

John S - sorry, I don't understand.
Esahc - Been using Avast. Still on free having changed to new to me laptop. Tried doing exclusions but it hasn't worked.
Carolyn, I always used Avast (and had one or 2 issues with WX5) but after a great deal of investigation and hunting through reviews and comparisons I moved to Windows Defender (built in to Win 10).
This is the Avast current instructions for excluding a specific folder (I would exclude incomedia) in case you choose to stick with it.

However, I can find no evidence that the built in Windows Defender is any less effective, so in my opinion you would be well advised to uninstall Avast (Bonus: no more adverts!!!) and then ensure that Windows Defender is enabled properly (although I never log in to Microsoft).
In my other life I am Chase Computers, with few exceptions none of my customers run 3rd party anti-virus.
