Sigh... now I find that the Guestbook does not work as it should. Have a look at http://jkbsystems.com/test/ and click on the Guestbook. Try to send a comment.

I tested your guestbook. Did you used your website's control panel to check if the guestbook folder's permission are correct ? Please check this post for tips regarding the guestbook and the Control panel:

http://answers.websitex5.com/post/2860

If the file permission are incorrect, you will have to set them manually on your server using any FTP client software, like Filezilla. If you do not know how to do this, you can ask your web hoster to do it for you. The folder's name is the one you choos when installing the guestbook widget.

And Pcssa denia can't be more right: every one should read the manual, which is available for free in the Download section of this site.

Yes I have read the help tips and the manual.

When I did the Web Site Test from the site's control panel I'm told :

Server public folder path (/blog/) FAIL
Ask the hosting provider the path of the read/write folder. This folder must have its permissions set as 777.

Now just which folder or path exactly needs permissions set to 777? Is it just /blog/ or what? The site guestbook files live at http://jkbsystems.com/test/guestbook.php (/public_htm/test/guestbook.php) and the blog files live at http://jkbsystems.com/test/blog/index.php (public_html/test/blog/index.php).

Thanks for your time.

When you installed your guestbook, you were asked to give the public folder path. That's the name of your guestbook folder.

Same thing for your blog.

Both folders should be set to 777,on your server,  in order to let your visitors post comments. You dont set the permissions on a particular php file, but on the folder that holds the blog's files and to the folder that holds the guestbook files.

Hope I'm clear, it would be easier for me to explain it in French, my language.

Lol...

When I set the /blog/ folder to 777 I get this error message:

Strange.... I get an email saying there is a new entry to the guest book, see below:

A new comment was added to the article "n09bna47":
Name: Bernard
E-mail: ***
Internet website:
Message: Test, guestbook
Use this link to approve the comment:
http://www.jkbsystems.com/admin/guestbook.php?post_id=n09bna47

What is interesting is that the guestbook DOES NOT live where the email says? It is suposed to live at jkbsystems.com/test/

Ideas???

That's the comment I've added to your guestbook, to test it. If you approve that comment, in your Control panel, it will appear in the guestbook page.

Try approving it.

James, in my case, I had to manually create the guestbook folder on my server and set the permissions to 777. The widget does not create the folder. Can you check on your server that your guestbook folder is there ? If not, simply create it, using the same name you put in Public folder path, when installing the widget.

Example: if you wrote guestbook as Public folder path, create a new folder called guestbook at the root of your server.

I used Filezilla, for that.

Please let me know if this work.

Take a look at your screen capture: both your blog and bookguest folders are set to 755, not 777. Set those at 777 and give it another try.

Under General Settings does the URL Address end with a /  ?

If not, try adding one, as this was the root cause of a similar problem that I was having with the guestbook.

Just tested: I have 2 websites using a guestbook, on 2 different servers. On the first one, the guestbook folder is set à 755 and the comments do appear (after approval, as set) and on the second one, I must set the permissions at 777 if I want the comments to be added. It does'nt work on the second server at 755. So I think it could depend on  each server own's security settings.

Hello everybody...

Same problem here... I tried and tried again and again but My guestbook (livre d'argent) on www.servisoluces.ch will not work.

using Filezilla, I created a "bookguest" directory with the 777 rights and I tried with or without slash. Its on the root of the site at the same level like admin or cart.... so I don't know what's wrong with that...

I have the same problems.

My url for the guest book is www.colin-allison.com/dineindia/gb, in the set up I have put the comments folder as both 'gb' & 'gb/' both act the same. I manually created the folder on my server and made sure it had 777 permissions.

As with every one else if I set it to imidiate show, the comment appears in the book and the folder, but the Abuse button does nothing, and the notification arrives in my inbox but No Comment comes up when I click the link to the admin area. Just the same when I use admin approval No Comment.

Done the computability check and get all greens.

I have tried this many times with various configurations, the only possible reason I can think of is that the site admin cannot detect or read the comment files? Can't think that so many people can all have a serever issue. Cry

The abuse button will simply tell you in the admin section that the comment has been motified as being abusive. Up to you to delete it or not. Of course, if you cannot see the comments in the admin section, it's not of a great help...

Did you tried to set up a blog ? The blog and the guestbook uses the same php engine. Check if the blog works... I was told by a friend of mine that her guestbook only works if she installs a blog on here server. A long shot, but might be worth testing.

You dont have to use the blog afterward, if you dont need it.

As I said before, the guestbook, on my server, works fine and the Admin section does let me see, approve and delete comments.

Stupidly that looks like the answer, I set up a Blog then deleted it again (after uploading first) and all seems to be working fine.

Sounds to me that there is a fault in the Guest Book initialisation which isn't there in the Blog. Just maybe the X5 programmers need to look at that!!!!  Laughing

Thank BmT

Thanks again to B who purposed the solution.

For me to it was ok to create first a blog and then a guestbook.

It's a strange way to figure out but it seemes to be the right way.

Thanks

Hi Guy's,

Mine didn't work either but found that.... Like you BMT my permissions on the Blog HAD to be 755 not 777. The Guestbook wehaveto set up and change the permissions to 777. I was also trying it with a sub-directory and you MUST get the green light on the public folder.

The Blog when changed to 777 was inaccessible when viewed on the internet. So I reverted it back to what it was originally. **IMPORTANT** The Comments Server folder path in the Blog must include the sub-directory you are working in..... if you are using a sub!!!

The BlogHADto go on as well as the Guestbook before it would work!! Same as what your friend said BMT

Like you said Colin I think the same too....... The Blog sets all this up for the Guestbook to work!!

I reckon a hell of a lot of X5ers are going to struggle with these features don't you?? Mind you I must admit it works flawlessly when installed!!

But there again who has the patience to stick with the problem till it's solved!!

It seems that the guestbook installation is server dependent, Frank, for some reason. I've got a guestbook on one of my server running fine, comments accepted, admin section working great, and NO blog ever installed on that server. And some of you folks out there will need to have a Blog installed prior to the Guestbook, to have that guestbook working... strange.

Will ask Incomedia about this behavior.
