I have constructed a website using WebsiteX5 Evolution 9 (pensionlindely.dk) in Danish which I have successfully uploaded to the internet as my main site which includes a welcome page and is set up for two other languages, English and German. When I try to upload the English version to a folder I call "en " I get the message : Connection error. It is not possible to complete the operation (FTP-create directory ) I also get the message in the text: Can't create directory, file exists (550)

Be carefull with letters is uppercase or not, keep them the same.
Maybe check your server with FileZilla this is an FTP programm. Remove the 'en' directory. and try again.

I have accessed my site with FileZilla and removed the "en" file which proved to be empty. Have now re-submitted my main site and subsequently uploaded the english version to a folder "en". This appeared to go well but my welcome page does not appear when I vist the site, any ideas?
No, not without the site adress... maybe you can place the site here?
I assume you followed these steps? http://answers.websitex5.com/post/26661

When I upload my original site (step 5 Website export to internet )which folder should I sellect to publish the website? I have previously left this path blank and the site is exported less the welcome page.
You don't have to use a folder. If your site has 1 language you can place it in the root of your hired website (name) at your provider. Your website will then be available after choosing the internet address. If you place it in a map with a name, lets say a map with the name ron, then to start up your site you need to select on internet yourwebsitehost.dk/ron to get there.
But your site uses languages, so you start at start page and then select the language.
So in your case you need to place your English site in the 'EN' box, because you made a link from your start site to the 'EN' box.
Your German link is not set yet, set it to GE or GER, at your start up screen.
Then copy your German translated site to the same box so GE or GER. This name is chosen by you, make only sure you use the same name for you link at the start page to go to the desired language box.

I have uploaded my original (danish) site and have no problems there, the site appears with the language option on the welcome page.
When I upload the english version the the folder EN, the original site is replaced by the english version and the welcome page does not appear- See "pensionlindely.dk". I thought the answer may be not enough space with my provider but I have expanded to 30 mb so that should not be a problem.
Then you must have uploaded to the standard folder not the 'EN' folder.
Check this and keep in mind that you have to use capitals the same way as on your host. On your site its 'en' (no capitals).
But i see the englisch version works (but this could be the old one i dont know....)
http://pensionlindely.dk/en/
So if you need the englisch one to update do so, after that do the danish again
(to http://pensionlindely.dk)

I have now uploaded both sites according to you advice, the initial danish site works well, and the language options come up in the welcome screen. When i try to access the english version I get the message"Not found - the requested URL/en/ was not found on this server"
I believe I may not be uploading to the correct folder. On 5: Website export to internet there is the option "Select the folder where you want to publish the Website, then press on 'start' to launch the site export." I then select the third icon below that line which is "create a new folder" a box then appears which says "Enter the name of the new folder." I insert the "en" in this box and then press start to initiate the upload. Is this the correct procedure?
Ron, This is difficult, i am not sure in wich folder you start. If you start the export you will see an destination folder option, if you leave this blank you wil get a screen of all folders of your websiteprovider. If - i am not sure about this- you used something like the folder httpdocs to put your standard website in (just click the one where you put your website in) then choos that one. you will see the files for your standard site.
In this folder make a folder with the third icon 'en' (not 'EN') then click on it so that you are inside the folder, then start export.
