I get this message when trying to open my file. It worked just a little while before.
An error occurred while loading the project.

This is not a nice error. Try the backup button in the project selection hopefully you can restore a previous session.
Else I am afraid you need to use one of your own backups if you have not made any then you need to start over again. Hopefully you have already uploaded your website then the content there can be used for the new project that helps a least a bit.
Make regular backups in step 5 export project and save them on another medium then where x5 is regurly.
Andre, you say, "make regular backups in step 5...", which I understand. But at the same time, I have "Create a Backup Copy every time you upload" selected in my Save preferences. Are those backup copies useable? How do they work?
Matthew, perhaps you also have these backup copies of your site. (That is, if you haven't exported backup copies of your project, maybe you at least have a backup from your last upload.)
In a different thread of mine, I queeried about my missing project file. (That thread has been resolved.) When my project wasn't showing up in my existing projects list, I didn't have a "Backup" button on the project selection window. Now I see it. But when I click it, there's an empty list in the backup management window. I can click "New Backup" to create a backup, but there doesn't seem to be a way to restore from a backup that was created automatically (since the list is empty; now that there's something in the list, I could restore from that).
Hopefully these questions are helpful to you as well, Matthew. Good luck getting your project back!
A backup from the project window is a different backup then step5, step5 export project is way better.
There is already an IDEA post to replace one with the other, but that is up to Incomedia.
The backup in the project is an escape an extra feauture Incomedia built in, in case users forgot to backup with step5.
It is not as secure because it can't be kept on another medium (if your drive fails) also it keeps attached to the original project (you need some project data) in step 5 this is not the case.
So set automatic backup on, in case you forget a backup in step 5 it might save you.
You don't need to do step 5 everytime (offcource it's up to you) my general advice in this is:
Do it at the start of a project more often (every hour or less) depend on how much work you put in.
After the projects works good backup in step 5 after a lot of small changes or difficult changes or a lot of work changing the project, this way you never lose much in case something happens.
Goodluck on saving your projects.
Best Regards,
