Has any ever managed to create a landing page with no headder or foooter and no menu bar.

In the page properties try activating the option Create page without template:
You can activate the Page without a Template.
Where:
3 Sitemap - Features (Menu above/Sheet with Cog) - Graphic - click to "Create Page without Template "

You can make the landing page you creates without template, as a hidden page. This way it will not appear in the menu, but you can use it as target anyway.
