How to import an excel workbook/worksheet to cart (bulk items) re "invalid header"  en

Autor: periklis-phillip S.

Using this program on a friend's computer I wanted to try before buying it but not happy with an import items problem with the cart!

I have an excel workbook/spreadsheet (in table format) with multiple 12" records I'm selling however when I try to import items I receive the "nvalid header" error and my csv file header is not "invalid" in my opinion. I have simply created the header with the categories as per the cart and made my entries suit the format (categories) of the cart (by only using the item name and description for the artist and title of each record) and it fails to work/import when I save my worksheet/workbook as a csv file!

Hi periklis-phillip,

The importing procedure can be quite tricky at times. Not any excel file will do, you must be sure it is formatted correctly.

In order to get the correct formatting, I would suggest two ways.

Visit our online guide here:

https://help.websitex5.com/en/v16/pro/index.html?_ga=2.1186354.2071752054.1533566126-1606929304.1519403648

and search for the import section, which explains exactly how to achieve that.

Alternatively, you might try and perform an export directly from the software, thus generating a correct csv file which can guide you on how to properly format yours

Please let me know should you need further help with this

Thank you

Stefano

Yes I tried to export from the app first to get the correct format as a draft but then I need to open in table/spreadsheet (xls) format to add my items configuratively and then when trying to import the ammended draft with my additional items I got the error. I believe that maybe the (ID) field/column causing the problem and was curious as to what I should use for my added items as an ID so I will try removing this field/colum and try again and report back with the result and if the "invalid header" error s rectified!

Thanks

You should have the field, but no value for the field. Example

Field1; field2;field3

111;222;333

This is a normal "file"

Field1; field2;field3

111;;333

This is also a normal file, but the file will give no value for field2

Field1; field2;field3

;222;333

This is also a normal file, but the file will give no value for field1

If field1 was an ID-field this could be useful.

The file must hold the fields that is neccessary. You cannot just delete a field - you have to let the values be "blank"

Grazie

Just spent 15 minutes wording a reply and tried to attach a file and it came up with error that attachment is not allowed so I dunno what else to do here but I can't use this program with being able to use the cart to sell my stuff...very frustrated right now with all of this...how do I attach anything? Tried to attach an xls file and a csv file and both "not allowed" so I'm left helpless here! :-(

The only thing I'd like to ask and know after trying all that was suggested here is, why does the cart export csv file open in excel as a csv format but when I open my spreadsheet xls file (saved as a csv file) it opens in excel as a table and not in csv format? Clearly saving my xls file as csv doesn't actually save it as a csv by Excel! :-(

Attached zip

There are 3 files

"vinylcatalog.xls" saved as an xls file that I update (add/remove items regularly that are added or sold)

the "vinylcatalog.xls" file above saved as "vinylcatalog.csv" - saved as a csv file but yet opens afterwards in spreadsheet format/layout in Excel

"csvexportfromWebxXwithmanualaddeditems" file - exported from WebsiteX5 that opens as a csv format file (not as a spreadsheet/workbook)

Why does my csv file not open in Excel as a csv file like the WebsiteX5 export file opens?

I'm about to give up here and losing faith and lots of time trying to fix this problem! :-(

Also like to say thank you to all for your help thus far as it's really appreciated. Don't think it's not appreciated but I'm really frustrated with this!

And again I remain frustrated typing this comment and my 8KB zip file fails to upload/attach, again with the error "The filetype you are attempting to upload is not allowed."  :-(

Do not worry, once you understand how to use excel everything will be simplified.

Non ti preoccupare, una volta che hai capito come usare excel tutto si semplificherà.

Hi periklis-phillip,

The Help Center limits the maximum amount of files you can send at once, both by number and by size.

If you can't manage to send them properly, please try using an external service such as Wetransfer.

Upload the files there, then generate a link for it and paste it here.

Keep me posted

Stefano

Ok... I have uploaded 3 files to the following dropbox link

gemm csv file is an old csv file that I used to update and upload to a site selling my records years ago.

the other 2 files are a list of 112 records I was trying to upload to cart in website X5 and whilst one is saved as a csv file and the other saved as an xls file they both open in spreadsheet/table format in Excel but then so does the old Gemm csv file that used to upload fine, online, to the Gemm website years ago when I was using that site to sell records.

Anyway here's the link to the Dropbox folder

I posted a comment earlier that has been removed or for some reason didn't work but anyway I'm not going to write it all again and to keep it short I've added a file saved as a csv file by Excel and UTF-8 encoding to my dropbox link above and file name

"websitex5 hiphop vinyl csv file UTF-8.csv"

but it still doesn't open as a csv/unicode when opened afterwards which leads me to believe that Excel is not actually saving as a csv file otherwise I have no idea how to do it which is very likely as I am no expert with either Excel or csv files!

Thank you all for your help and sorry to waste everyone's time but it's looking like I'm about to give up on this ask as I'm pending hours trying all different things to try and save a stupid csv file that will upload to cart and goin as far as saving as csv-dos, csv-mac and every and any other options/encoding tried in an effort to fix this problem/error or to just create a proper csv file from my Excel workbook/spreadsheet and everything I've tried has failed sadly!

Thanks again to all!

That's amazing John S and is exactly what I'm trying to do and been trying to get an answer/instruction here but haven't been I'm yet to be advised/shown/explained how to save my table/list workbooks/spreadsheets like that :-( , which clearly is what you have done! :-)

Thank you!!!

When I tried to upload your file I now get an error (Invalid Field Count(Line 39)) ??

Now I just need to know, or be told/shown how to do it if you could please explain the process for/to me on how to save my xls workbooks like you did and then figure out what the "(Invalid Field Count(Line 39))" error is ?

So basically
a) I need to know how to save my spreadsheets the way you have done
b) I need to figure out what's wrong with line 39

well - I showed in my first post which delimiter to use, and KolAsim also told this. But it can be difficult to see the difference.

You have to use ; (semicolom ) as the field separator.

NOT , (comma ).

What I did to make the file : I took your CSV file, loaded it into notepad++ and then used search and replace.

I searched for , and replaced with ;

But this is not a good way if you would happen to use the comma as decimal sign.

Look here for a better way : https://ashwaniashwin.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/save-excel-file-as-a-csv-semicolon-delimited-file-along-with-unicode-encoding/

You will then have the file in the correct format from the start.

This was the a)

About the b) - when importing the converted file into excel, all looks fine. But you could try to remove some of the special characters you have in some of the fields in the records before.

I would try to search for the record that is causing this, simply by removing some of the records about line 39, and then import. If the error then goes away, then try with a file where you remove these records one at a time.

When you find the record that is causing this, try to see what could be wrong - is there any special characters?

Tell us how it goes

 The WebSiteX5 program has nothing to do with it you must follow the instructions in the Guide, and reread carefully and apply what has already been said, as well as knowing your excel program well;
Everything can be controlled with the spreadsheet, coding and semi-separators.
I use OO.o.Calc, that I know, without having any problem.
As already mentioned, you must respect the formatting with a single separator (;) and do not use special characters.

Actually wasn't in the price field but appeared that way because the conversion had thrown a (;) in the middle of many descriptions which then ended up with a word that should of been in description ended up a price field that then resulted in one too many fields on any of the lines this occurred.

When corrected I then find/get an error advising cannot import a particular line/item and seems that no 2 items can have the same name/code and because I use the name/code field for the artist this results with such an error

Yes I read what people post/comment but I do not use Excel in any other way other than as spreadsheet/workbook layout as per my xls file and I'm not going to rewrite over 2000 items/records/lines in csv format when I have all my records already as xls spreadsheets and I cannot find anywhere in Excel that saves in UTF-8 other than under the dropdown tab "Web" when saving so not sure where else the "spreadsheet" formatting can be converted/saved within Excel to the csv format either before or as saving!

There is no option in Excel to save as UTF-8 + semen separator, the only UTF-8 option is, when saving as csv, under a "Tools" drop down list under "Web Options"  :-/

Hello periklis

I gave a link to how to save from excel so it will be in the correct format.

You could let notepad++ convert the file to UTF-8 and eventually also convert the  comma to a semicolon,  if you don't want excel to do this.

In all cases you have to take care of the special characters.

If you will use notepad++ to convert, then you must be sure that there is no semicolons in the file before you make the replacement. You must then first convert the semicolons to another character ( could be #) and then convert the commas to semicolons.

This way it should function

Thanks KolAsim but I am paying attention but it still doesn't solve the problem of selling multiple records by the same artist (which the code/name field is used for) and clearly the only way around this/that problem, that I can think of, is to combine the artist and song title into the one for the "name/code" field.

John S. thanks and apologies/sorry as I didn't see the "link" you posted, for how to edit excel options and use of notepad, as it was hidden and I didn't see the "see more" option in your comment to click on it to expand, on your comment with the link.

John S. Thank you so much for the link on how to convert my spreadsheets to the appropriate/acceptable, and proper, csv format!

Seemingly have it all sorted now except for the fact that I only have 1 of most items yet in the cart I cannot find any way to limit/restrict the quantity that someone can add to cart (one can enter 2 or 20 in the box then click the cart button to order 20 of that particular item/record) even though I only have 1 of every record to sell. :-/

Thanks again to all for everyone's help/contribution with this somewhat not completely rectified problem, however I would like to say big thanks to John S. for the link to specifically detail/show me how to use Excel & notepad to create the csv files compatible to upload to the cart.

The remaining problem/s now are how does one control the quantity of anything so that only the quantity that one has in stock or on hand, can be added to the cart? Or how to simply remove the quantity "box" altogether perhaps if possible?

My new file is here with Artist and Title combined into one for the "name/code" field and seemed to import to cart without any problem :-)

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bnyr4e0x2ye9ju2/AABxgMPGaFpYaCSfcd9wXwUba?dl=0

Any tips on how to restrict the quantity one can order (add to cart) or how to remove this box/option altogether?

Thanks
