you can do that, but you need to use custom code, and you need to customize the search code to fit to the template and your desire place.

for example in many websites normaly search field been place on the right side of the nav bar. x5 still does not give you the easy option to that but with little bit of coding you can.

check www.wdesigners.us, also if you check www.usx5.com, in the template section, there are 2 templates available (more to come) they all have search field with complete new design on the nav bar.
