You can create a page or pages where only members can enter. Set these pages locked in step 2, connect the users made in step 4 also in step 2 to the locked page(s). you need to maintain the login and password for the users yourself in X5. (step 4 acces management)

There is an option to create an email form in the login section so users can give you there loggin name or other data. (you can link this in step 4, access management -> settings tab, you need to create this emailform page seperatly), if you have received it you can creata a login for them so they can visit the page(s) that are locked for other users.

But that's about it.

Anthon, keep in mind

you own the evo version, in evo you do not have automatic registration, so you have to add your members (username and pass) manullay inside your project file, then upload your project again in order for them to be able to log in.

What other versions are there, and what exactly can they do to make a true membership site like we find elsewhere?

pro version has automatic registration option, but still it depend what would you like to do? for example even in pro version if you have a shop and membership pages, still they have to fill up the for in order to buy from your shop.
