Tag processing needs improvement to make searching effective
Author: Arnold PageCurrently it is very difficult to find a relevant post using a search string. Dozens or hundreds of irrelevant posts come up, with the result that it takes so long to look through them all that it is simpler just to post a new question, which may cause unnecessary work for the moderators if in fact it has been answered somewhere already.
I think the reason why so many irrelevant search results appear is that search tags are processed and saved as individual words. When I entered the tags 'blog comments, setting default page, htaccess file' or something like that on my last post the following tags appeared: 'blog , comments , default , file , htaccess , page , setting'. As a result anyone searching for an answer with a search string that includes the word 'file' or 'page' or 'setting', such as 'index file', 'home page' or 'font setting' in it is going to be directed to my post, among dozens or hundreds of others, and my post will be completely irrelevant to their search.
I think the same processing occurs to tags entered to web site pages, which causes a similar but far more serious problem, because anyone using the web to search for a combined string such as 'natural healthy diet' will not find the web page in which that tag has been entered, since it will be have been saved as three separate words.
Unless I am missing something I suggest that the tag-handling process is amended to leave tags as they are entered by the users, both in the 'answers' pages and in the X5 software.
I am going to enter tags for this post as 'tag processing, improving searching'. Let's see what happens.
