Link to gallery from home page, but not from menu

I would like to add a temporary gallery to my site. I want to be able to link to this gallery via an image (in effect, a button) on the home page, not from the menu. See the attached screen shot, which is a mock-up of what I would like to do. The link to the gallery would be the dark red rectangle with text, to the right of the image of the bird. I have not been able to create this link on the Map/Sitemap Creation tab. Can it be done?

Jim, create your gallery (create a page if necessary) and if you don't wish to have the page shown on a menu, hide it.
Then select the menu button graphic and select link, then link to the webpage with the gallery.
