Export the website to disk - to edit html - how to put back into project ?  en

The "export website" to a folder option says this can be used ...."to make changes to the HTML pages before confirming publication in the Internet".

I have done the editing of the Index.html file but cannot put the export back into Evolution 14 as a project, as the Import box only accepts .iwzip.

How do I go about the "before confirming publication in the Internet". I'd like to put it all back into a project and use Evolution to upload it.

A lot of the changes to the html code can be done from within the program if you change the code outside of the program you can’t import it back into the program but if you let us know what your trying to achieve maybe we can help you do it in the program.

Hi Jamie

Thanks for reply. I was a virgin website builder a few weeks back and I inserted some custom code into the index.html using Wizard Expert page. This came from my website hoster who said it would improve the site's searchability. So I ended up with two lots of <titles>, <description> <keywords>. You get the idea.

I understand now the function of Export Website to folder/disk. I can edit the html. I can then point my browser to this folder's index.html and run the website offline to check.

Question:  What I cannot for the life of me is understand how to put this edited website code back into a project to:- 1. Upload edited site to the server and 2. Carry on maintaining/improving the edited website.  ???

There is no way in Evolution to directly edit the html. Specifically to delete my erroniously inserted custom code. Maybe you're allowed to do that in Pro version. I have tried editing the Index.html files in the Upload and Preview folders but the old version just reappears next time  I look in these folders after closing Evolution.

Hi peter

If you hold the ctrl key and click preview this should regenerate the project file including the index.html file I can't guarantee that it will remove the code you put in the html file but its worth giving it a try, also if this does not work try the following: close the x5 program down then reopen the index.html file delete your custom code and then save it (use a html editor such as dreamweaver or notepad ++) close the file and reopen website x5, load the project file and the re click ctrl & click preview at the same time to regenerate your project file.

Let us know what happens

I have given up. It is impossible to edit the Index.html within the Project (Evolution 14). I'm not saying the program isn't any good cos it clearly got me started and site is online but not very "visible".

I edit the index.html directly on the server instead, which is rather a pain nevertheless.

Thank you for you input.

Peter, as Jamie said, you can edit html code before upload, but this is bad practise. Such action would be required before EVERY upload.

There is seldom a need to change WX5 code, but there is frequently a need to add html code to WX5.

If this is the case, please advise what you wish to achieve, there are multiple ways to add code to WX5 (and these can vary depending on whether you stay with Evo or move to Pro) eg into the HEAD (expert accessed thu page properties), HTML cell or html embedded in a cell.

Why are you editing the code?

Hi. As I explained. I added ( being a newbie ) custom code in error and cannot delete it. I am assuming it may have something to do with the exceedingly low SEO ratings even though site is validated etc. Can I not send the Project file to you. You edit out the gross errors and recompile (?) it back into a Project File such that I can import it, and I'll pay in credits.....?

I have found out how to do it. I exported the Project. Opened the resulting .iwzip with 7zip. Edited the html and imported it back into x5 Evolution and opened the file on the server to check.....
