Adding a link to a web page to allow a file to be downloaded  en

This message is intended for Andre.

Taking your advice on setting up a link simply using some text.

The first thing I notice is that my Text Object - Link layout is different from yours.

The choices I have are 'Action' and Tooltip' not 'Description' as you showed on your comment.

So I guess we are not using exactly the same version of WebSite X5. Mine is Evolution 15.

But it would seem that 'Tooltip' does the same as 'Description'. Is that right ?

You can see the comments below, in action, by going to my web site :- www.denmeadcycleride.org.uk

Then go to the Cycle Routes page and look for the links just above the 10 mile map.

Next an assumption. On right clicking both of the links I get the following :-

Is that what you would expect to see ?

When using the 'Save Target as' option on the gpx link, I do NOT get presented with the gpx file to save. Instead it lists a '10-Miles.xml' file.

However, when I do the same for the jpg link, the 'Save Target as' option presents me with the correct jpg file for saving. And I can save it correctly.

So assuming the box listing the options including 'Save Target as' is what you expect to see, then attempting to download a gpx file does not work.

Either there is something preventing a gpx file being downloaded within Website X5 or the problem is a more general one ? I do not what the answer is.

So, I'm still left with how to download a gpx file.

As John said way back, why don't I use the 'Download' Object within the X5 marketplace, but as that means buying some credits, I don't want to do that unless I know that that object will handle gpx files.

Hopefully, you help me to sort things out ?

Regards,

Mike.

Mike as already stated in the previous post, te download button does not support gps files. So don't buy it.

Maybe Incomedia can update the button, but I would not recommend buying it before that time.

I also made a comment for that in the previous post for Incomedia.

Different version no, maybe different language version of browser and x5, any way in the link option there is only 1 extra TAB that one gives you a kind of tooltip / mouse over effect with the text you put in. In every UK version of x5 it is called description to my best knowladge. It is in the text object.

I tested the gps link, but again, I have a dutch version browser. It depend a bit on the browser and language but there is always an option to save the file.

Here is my dutch version screenshot for the gps file link:

And this gets into the next screen:

So yes it works. But the text differs, that's why I always not use right mouse button no more, people figure it out in there own language.

Else like already stated if you don't want to mess around with codes, make it an zip or arj file, almost everybody can unzip a zip file and zip files are always downloaded.

You can use 7zip as free program to create this. But there are many more.

Hope this helps you again a bit....

Best Regards

Hi Mike,

I do hope Andre doesn't mind me entering hte discucssion. I left the previous one after the 'Download Object' option came into view.

A gpx-file is essentially a xml-file and some browsers don't like to download xml-files because the can be dangerous. When I tried your download your file it came down as 10-Miles.gpx.txt'.

Might I suggest a different approach? Make a zip-file of the gpx-file and use that.

Also you can use a construction like:

Click <a href="downloads/10-Miles.gpx.zip" download>here</a>

to force the browser to download the file when you click on it, so there's no need for the user to use the right mouse button.

I've made a page for  you on how to achieve this. See https://www.websitex5.info/download-link.html

By the way, there are several methods to upload files to the server

- Use the method I described on the webpage

- Use an FTP-program like FileZilla (it's free and very good)

- Use the linked file option of an HTML-object

- Use the linked file option in the general settings

Hope this helps,

Robert

Hello Mike

On this site : http://www.bramminginfo.dk/brm09/side-7.html ( refresh by using CTRL+F5 ) I have made several

examples for you. I will let the page stay for a couple of days.

This is my last post to you. I will not make more posts, unless you have specific questions to me.

Hope you have your problem solved.

Kind regards

Robert,

First - many thanks for responding and please pass on my comments below to Andre.

I have now created zip files with the gpx files embedded.

All works fine now, as when a person clicks on the link, they are presented with a window allowing them to save the zip file. They can then, of course, unzip the gpx file for use on their cycle computer or on an app on their smart phone.

Again many thanks for providing me with a solution.

Very kind regards,

Mike.

Good call Mike.

I hope Incomedia wil change the download button for you and other users, that would also be a good solution.

For now the zip works best, the right mouse button differs from browser and language, so it's not always straight forward for a user.

Thx Robbert and John, for helping out, and i never mind if people help or correct and jump in, please do, we can only learn from eachother and we are all human. laughing

Best Regards
