Have Version 12 tried the upgrade 6 months ago it destroyed the existing websites when converted has this been fixed

To my best knoladge any upgrade does not destroy your project. (and if so make a backup)
But I think you mean that the newer version looked very differently, that can be you are skipping a lot of version and with every version there are new item that might need adjustment or a different approach.

If you have trouble you can always ask here for help.
But the longer you wait, the more changes there will be and work.
Beside that you also need to learn how to handle the new items and adjust them for your project.
So give it a try, ask for help and benefit from all the new items and better and more up to date website, also the engine below the website is to latest standard. So it's worth it to make some effort.
But yes depending on the project it might take up some work.
