What is a "cover image" in a row format video background?

I am looking to use video as a background for a few rows in a web page. In the settings, there is a field named "Cover image". I can't find any explanation for what this is or what function it provides. Can someone please explain the purpose of the "cover image" when using video as a row format background for 1 or more rows?

Jason, this is from the built in help.
▪Cover image: you can specify a preview picture to associate with the video.Again,you can choose an image file from the online library, using the
button to open it, or from an offline folder on your PC, using the 
File selectionbutton.
The preview picture appears before the video and fades out when this starts. Setting up a preview picture is, therefore, particularly useful for mobile devices where videos are never started automatically.
