Making clipart transparent

Is there a way of making a clipart object transparent. I want to add a priece of clipart but there is a whte box around it. As my webpage is not whte this white bx stands out- is there any way of removing the whote box and amking the image transparent?

PNG images support transparency. You could try converting your clipart to the PNG file format using a suitable image editor.
