I am using Website X5 Pro 2019.2.7. In January 2020 Stefano G wrote that in version 2019 "you can decide to let the customer receive the confirmation email only after he's paid for his order directly after creating it on your website. This way, the button will no longer be presented in the email." How do I do this? I can't find any setting in the Shopping Cart area. (My website url is booksforlife.today.)

If you're working with Pro edition and choose the Send data to a Database option, you can choose when the order confirmation e-mail should be sent, as well as move on to designing the various e-mails that get sent during the purchasing process.

Thanks Andre, this seems to be the answer. It means I shall have to find out how to set up a database, which I have not used before. There have been many posts asking how to get rid of the Buy Now button in the confirmation email, and this is the first time I have seen a proper answer to the question!

PS: Would it not be possible to provide the same functionality when users choose the "Send data by email" option?
Not to my knowladge you need to have the data available in several stages this is not possible when you use the email option.
