Assuming I am not wrong, yes you should join the throng. This issue goes back quite a ways and has been asked for many times (although I fear a database will be required). I believe I can turn this thread into an idea if that is your wish.

you can already send the order confirmation e-mail after the payment is received: to do this, you need to define the sending of the orders to a database. Are you having any issues in setting this up?
