Retention of formatting in text fields on forms

When creating forms I use a text filed to add work notes. When doing this all formatting is lost in relation to paragraphing or line returns
so it would be useful for a text fild to retain its formatting on specific notes for invoices etc, otherwise its just one very long paragraph with no formatting at all.
So retention of paragraph formatting in text fields for invoices when creating the customer details form with added fields for text... or is there another way to ensure this happens?

Use text area instead of text field.
