406 error now Multiple Activations  en

Hi there I have just purchased X5 evolution 10. I installed it no problem on my Windows 8 PC where it continues to work well.

I also need it on my laptop. The initial install worked OK but the update on the laptop gives me a 406 error which is a problem.

Out of preference I use my PC as a Linux machine and run Windows programs in a Virtual Box. Works really well. However, if I try to install Evolution 10 in the VB it tells me that I have had too many requests for activation.

X5 Evolution 9  works well in the VB and I would like Ev 10 to do so too.

Since E10 doesn't work on my laptop what is my status as far as activations go since I can only use Windows 8 OR the Linux VB one at a time.

Hello Peter,

The error 406 means that the program cannot connect to the server to activate it and it happens because of the Antivirus/firewall. Since it's in a virtual machine check if the host OS is not blocking the connection too.

If you install the program on a Virtual Machine, everytime you make some changes on the settings the program has to be activated again because it is seen as a new machine.

Try to set the settings for the virtual machine you like and once done install the program again and follow this procedure:

If this should not work send me as zip file the websitex5.html file so I can unlock ot for you.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll have a look at the link in a bit.

It is actually the laptop that gives the 406 error. The virtual machine loads fine but needs activation and it fails because I have one working copy on the Win8 machine and one semi working copy on the laptop. So I am in a loop. Can't fix either at the moment but at least the windows machine flies along.

Thanks again for the help registering my X10 on my Virtual Box. Worked well.

Unfortunately when I try to do the upgrade as indicated on the opening page I get about half way through and the machine tosses a 406 error.

You mention that I should pause virus checkers firewall etc before doing the upgrade. I don't have these running in the base machine and I disabled the firewall in the XP virtual machine, but still got the 406.

Interestingly I run X10 on the same machine using windows 8 (dual boot). This is locked down using AVG Internet pro and nothing gets through except light. The upgrade using this config worked perfectly with AVG and the windows virus checker running. The Ubuntu Linux through which I run the Virtual box has no virus checker or firewall in operation. In the 5 years of constant Linux use I haven't had a virus or any form of attack. However, it gives the 406 error. How crazy is that!

Hello again

I think I have a work around.

The problem on my machine was not that the firewall was blocking the request but that the remnants of the program were still running as processes in WindowsXP. When I looked on the laptop under taskmanager I had 8 instances of X5 running.

To kill these instances just open up the task manager kill any X5 under Applications and then click the Processes tab. Kill any instances of X5 here (these are the problem).

I should have taken notice of the error report which says to close all programs before running the update and I wouldn't have had a problem. Obviously Windows 8 does a better job of closing processes in X5 than XP.

If you do this you then you have to run the update manually from the program folder (do not start X10 otherwise the problem will still be there)

Happy Peter

Do I need to un-install version 9 to install version 10? (error 406) Version was running fine.

Hi Paul,

No, versions 9 and 10 will happily co-exist on the same machine.
