Compressing images

I have a limited amount of webspace and need to keep my websites as small as possible.
In the past I have compressed images to be around 100kb. I now have Version 10. Is it necessary for me to continue to use compressed images or does the program reduce higher resolution images automatically?
Is so, what for example does the program reduce a 3Mb down to?

The program compresses the images but if you need to keep them as small as possible because of limited space it is better you compress them before becaue in the program you cannot decide the the compression factor or the maximum size of the images. In most cases it keeps them small but it's better to compress them before according to your needs.
