I have tried to link a pdf file to a page. I navigated to where the pdf wasaind selected it.

In the preview page I clicked on the link and was told the file did not exist.

I went back to where the file was and it had gone. This has happened on more than one occasion. This program does not seem to be very stable!

Hi John,

In order to try and assist here can you please clarify the following:

"I navigated to where the pdf was...

I went back to where the file was"

Where exactly was the .pdf file referred to above?  Was it a local file on your own computer, or was it stored on a portable hard drive, or USB flash drive or similar?  Or was it a remote file located on the internet that you were linking to via a hyperlink beginning http://

 Hi Paul,

My site is only local at the moment.

The files I refered to were in 'preview/files'. This is where I navigated to in order to select the file. After the error message this is where I went back to.

Seems a bit strange to me as the file had vanished.

 Thanks

Hi John,

The '...Preview/files' path is used internally by the program, and the contents will change many times as you build and edit your project.

It's not intended that you create hyperlinks to any files within this folder at any time.  Else you will experience errors and anomalies like you have done.

You can link to PDFs, documents, and media files from almost any other location on your PC aside from the Incomedia folders themselves.  Such as your Desktop, or the root of your Documents/My Documents folder, or simply a folder that you create yourself on your hard drive for storing files associated with your X5 project.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Paul

Hi Paul, Me again,

Still having a problem with images. I used a "Find us on Facebook" image stored on my desktop to import in to the footer. All worked well on my Wampserver but, when I uploaded to my host I only got the text and no image. I right clicked on the image and copied the link into word and the path was still showing as on desk top.

Does x5 not copy images into a folder prior to uploading?

Thanks again for your help, John

Hi John,

Yes, it makes use of two folders 'Preview' and 'Upload' and modifies the contents of those folders as you build and edit your site.

I can see that there is a link to the image present in your source code.  However, the link does not appear to be in the correct format.  It is C:/Users/bobspils/Desktop/FB_FindUsOnFacebook-114.png when it should be something more like images/FB_FindUsOnFacebook-114.png

Let's try and rectify this.  First, as a precaution, can you open the local  FB_FindUsOnFacebook-114.png file in an image editor/viewer just to check that there actually is an image present in the file.

Next, from within X5 check that you don't have 'Enable Transparency' enabled for that particular image in the footer editing screen  -  with certain combinations this can have the effect of making your image seem to disappear!

If that's not the cause of the problem, then delete the Image from the footer and create a brand new one, browsing to the path of the local image file on your desktop.

Then close X5 and backup your project.

Delete both the folders 'Preview' and 'Upload' along with their entire contents from within ...Documents/Incomedia/Website X5 v9 - Evolution/your project folder name

Restart X5 and hold the 'CTRL' key down whilst you enter the preview.  Then do a full upload to your webserver...  i.e. option 1 - Upload all Website files to the Internet, as opposed to option 2 - Export only the files modified, etc.

Clear your main browser cache and test your live webpage to see if the issue is resolved.

Let us know how you get on!

Of dear Paul, when I pasted the image in the footer instead of creating a link I used HTML code to do the link! What an idiot!! Sorted that thanks but, I now see at the bottom left in the preview I have now got "back to content and back to main menu". Where did that come from?

Hello John,

This text is present in the program but it's usually hidden. It depends probably on a html code that has not been closed correctly. It would be useful to see the page to identify the source of the issue.

Many thanks!

Further to what Claudio has explained, the following line is currently present as part of your footer source code:

<span class="imHidden"><a href="#imGoToCont" title="Read this page again">Back to content</a> | <a href="#imGoToMenu" title="Read this site again">Back to main menu</a></span>

I think this stems from the fact that you initially attempted to link to the Facebook image in your footer via HTML.

Go back to Step 1 - General Settings - Edit Graphic Template - 'Footer' tab, and check very carefully for any anomalies.  In particular check that all redundant HTML code inserts have been removed.  Refresh the site on your server if you make any changes.

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks Claudio and Paul. I deleted the Facebook logo, the copyright HTML also the site host info. but the problem was still there. Put every thing back, one other thing I noticed if you hover over the FB logo it is showing the link to the site host but when selected goes to FB page. This all started yesterday. I deleted the FB logo. Loaded another from desk top and linked to our FB page. Went to preview and got error message something like "could not follow thread" X5 is closing. I filled in the error report. and X5 closed. I re opened X5 and the message was temp copy found do you want to load, I said yes and that is when I found the problem. The site is now live at www.eastbournefhs.org.uk  Thanks again for all the help Regards, John.

Sorry both, I have found the answer. I looked at inspect element and found I had not closed "hosted by handmadepages" correctly. </> instead of <a/> thanks once again for your help.
