No, version 10 is much improved in that regard, and stores its own copies of all files used in a project. The following is an extract from the 'What's new in version 10' webpage on the Website X5 site:
File Management
WebSite X5 automatically copies the files linked to a project. By using copies, you avoid problems of deleted or moved files, you can extract resource files from the project and backup and import/export operations are faster.
