Hi not sure if I responded to your answer to my orignal question correctly.  Regretably your answer provided a very long solution and I proposed an alternate, seeking some instruction from you.

hi there thanks for your suggestion, I wonder if there is any mileage in the following method, as 1000 pages plus images is somewhat daunting?

Could I place a clickable A - Z list on the webpage which is linked to all surname cells of that initial in an excel file?  All the 'C's for example are then are revealed, thus allowing the webpage visitor to select the individual record - clicking on the surname in the excel extract which in turn is linked to a stored image - presumably in a hidden gallery? Up pops the image with ledgible words   and hopefully job done?

If only a year of death is known, I am wonder if a dedicated search engine attached only to the same Excel file would pull up all results for the chosen year - one of which can be selected as above?

Any chance of this working and if so how do I link please?

Would be v grateful of any suggestions
