SEO - page filename won't accept uppercase characters  en

I am re-designing and updating my old website and have decided to use Website X5 V11 to do this.

I don't want to lose my current (good) Google ranking during the migration, so I need to keep exactly the same filename for each page in X5 as I have right now, so that Google can still find each page as before.

For example, my current page http://shojistudio.com.au/Design_Ideas.html (generated using another software) needs to be called the same in X5.

The problem is that X5 seems to reject uppercase characters in page filenames.

When I replicate the page in X5, I change the File Name under Page Properties to Design_Ideas(.html), but after saving, the file name has changed back to lowercase design_ideas(.html)

Can this feature be changed so that upper- and lowercase characters are accepted?

Regards,

Peter

Hello Peter,

WebSite X5 permits only lower case characters in the File Name in the interests of best practice.

There are several reasons why mixing upper and lower case characters in a URL is a very bad idea.  Please see this blog post for an explanation:

My advice to you (and it is only that, YMMV) would be to build your site as normal in WebSite X5, accepting the lower case characters in the File Name.  When you are ready to go live with the new site, set up a 301 redirect from each old mixed-case URL to the new lower case version.  You will not lose search engine ranking if you set up the redirect correctly, and notify Google of the change of address using Google Webmaster Tools.

As an aside, the use of underscores (_) in URL's is also poor practice.  Now would be a very good time to change every one of those to a hyphen, thus:

Please see the following article from Google for further details:

Kind regards,

Paul
