While the “look” of the shopping cart is important and I will also like some design changes in the update, today I would like to focus on the functionality of the Shopping Cart.

Currently, there are a few issues that should be dealt with in the update which I will mention below:

  1. Allow minimum order value" Option
  • The “Allow minimum order value” option located under the "Options" section of the Shopping Cart should be deleted as it affects every order.

For Example:

Let’s say I have 2 different products being sold on my website. One large item is being sold at $100 for a quantity of 1 and a small item is being sold at $20 for a quantity of 1.

If I want only a minimum order value of $100 for the small item and $200 for the large item, upon checkout it affects the value that I desire for the small item. It forces me to make the value $200 for the small item which I do not want. View the message I get at checkout for the small item below:

My suggestion is that the “Allow minimum order value” option should be in the “Product Settings” section so the settings will only affect that product. It should also be taken into consideration to change “Allow minimum order value” to “Allow minimum order quantity”.

Not that this part is a big issue but if I set the product value at $20 for 1 and I want a minimum quantity of 5, should it not calculate that the minimum value be $100?

   2. Enable Coupon Code for the order

The next issue I have is with the Coupon Code option located under the Shopping Cart “Option” section.

If I enable a $50 Coupon to a customer and they used it for an order they placed on my site, they should not be allowed to use it again. The system should automatically detect that the customer already used the coupon and stop them from using it on another order.

I have tested this several times and was amazed that it was allowing me to continue to use the same coupon code on my site to purchase another order.

So, under the Coupon Code settings, checkboxes can be placed with the option to:Allow multiple orders with this coupon code

  • Allow one-time use with this coupon code
  • Allow multiple orders with this coupon code

An object can also be created to allow the customer to view their balance for that coupon, if the option for "Allow one-time use with this coupon code" was set.

  3. The Order Form

The order form located under the “Customer Details” section of the Shopping Cart does not allow you to rename the pre-set field. This is not a big issue, but it is worth mentioning since some countries have “Boroughs” and “Municipality” instead of “State” and “Province.
