Google Webmaster Tools / Search Console - Domain Prefix "www"

Can someone please advise if it is necessary / obligatory to add 2 properties for one domain e.g:
As you can see from the image below, this is something I have done in the past, however I am wondering if it is really necessary.
If anyone can provide a reliable and definitive answer, it would be much appreciated.

So post registration, I received the following message in my Google Search Console (Formerly Webmaster Tools).
As you can see from the image below, it is recommended by Google to add all variants of the domain name including with and without the "www" and also add the https version if this is applicable.!
