Crashing Again! X5 Evolution V12.0.4.21 (latest update).  en

Hello Everyone,

Anybody else getting this? And if so did you find a way to get around it?

X5 became totally unresponsive (oh the irony) while endlessly update the "responsive" grid. Was the beginning of a work session. All I had did was create 3 new empty rows to add a new section to my homepage. I had copied a few similar cells from existing rows to use as templates for the new section when suddenly i felt a tremour in the force; Had better save I thought just to be safe rather than sorry. And that was exactly when the endless updating crash kicked off.

See image "Here we go again".

I rebooted X5 and reloaded the project version that had crashed. I got a warning about it not having shut down properly but opened it anyway. Then saw I had lost a chunk of work.

See image "Here we go again 2".

The lost work was more that the missing graphic cells. I had also rearranged the elements to flip the visual presentation from "image / description" to "description / image". Lost all the rearrangement work.

I really am sick of the whole crashing thing with X5 and from what I see here on this forum the "professional" version isn't any better in that regard (which is ridiculous considering the HUGE jump in cost from the Evolution version).

Here is a suggestion to the developers: Change the version number from V12.0.4.21 to V0.12.0.4.21 beta until you can get your development ducks in a row enough that your customers do not have to suffer regular crashing events on an ongoing basis. When you have that you can legitimately go for a V1.0.

Hi,

If you are experiencing these problems, and you have not already open topic on the subject, try the following first of all the basic procedures for fixing the problem.

Install the x86 / 32-bit Visual C ++:

2010 - https://www.microsoft.com/it-it/download/details.aspx?id=5555
2012 - https://www.microsoft.com/it-it/download/details.aspx?id=30679
2013 - https://www.microsoft.com/it-it/download/details.aspx?id=40784
2015 - https://www.microsoft.com/it-it/download/details.aspx?id=48145

And open the Control Panel> Programs and Features> Turn Windows features on or off
Deactivate the box Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1, and then click ok. After disable the .NET 4.6 and click ok. When both were turned off they are turned on again and goes down then OK.

Let me know

A.Kris,

Thank you for your suggestion.

Will give it a go. Was asked to try similar with the last long bout of crashes with V20.0.4.19 and it made no difference whatsoever. Same story for others that were having similar problems (like change a font *crash*, change a font size *crash* etc).

Will let you know how it goes.

Cheers!

Gordon hi,

This was an answer I gave incomedia. The crashes are also installed and reinstalled after all this, perhaps something less. But there are. We hope for an update which resolved completely. Let's see how it goes now, after win10 had another update.

Hi A,

Again, thank you for trying to help.

I have just implemented your suggestions - (for both 32 and 64). Rebooted my PC. And tried again with a previously saved project from back before I had this recent round of crash problems. Once again I made no difference at all whatsoever even though all I tried to do was create 3 empty rows for my new webpage section and save there immediately before trying to do anything at all with them. Same endless error message about updating the responsive grid.

This is not a Windows problem imho. X5 was going fine the night before and I don't believe that anything from Windows broke anything to do with Windows. It's an Incomedia problem and they need to get it sorted out - fast!

What am I supposed to do meantime? Twiddle my thumbs waiting on Microsoft to sort out  Incomedia's problems?

I also use vastly more complex softwares like the Android Studio and Netbeans IDE's. Also use Adobe After Affects and Photoshop. All of these manage just fine to run without ever crashing on me. What's more both Google's Android Studio and Oracles Netbeans are, unlike X5, both completely free softwares.

I'm sick of it Incomedia (are you listening?).

Hi A,

Sorry to hear you are having so many problems too. I will try your idea of a private complaint post and hope it helps.

*fingers crossed*

Hi Gordon.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issue with the software.

I saw that you stated having tried the official solutions given by Incomedia that Kris reported to you without success.

I need to ask these couple questions:

Did the issue come up with a specific software update?

Do these crashes happen on a single project or different?

Do they happen when performing the same actions or different?

Does an error window pop out when the software crashes? If so, a screenshot of that would be useful. Also the "Details" tab if present.

Let me know

Hello Stefanno,

First up: Why did you change the status of my post from public to private? I sent a separate post as private on this issue and this one is not it. This post starts "Hello Everyone" because it is intended for everyone. I want the involvement of the community and the chance of any help that may come from there. Please restore my post to public asap.

As for your questions:

1. No. Initially V12.0.4.21 seemed fine (I avoided the previous update due to the huge problems I and lots of others had with loads of crashing in V12.0.4.19).

2. I only have one website in development with X5. The crashing started on the most recent save of that project. However, deleting that save and reverting back to a project save in which there was no problems at all produced the same cashes. And even reverting back several project saves made no difference (and i was rebooting Windows and X5 between each attempt).

3. Same action. Initially I had created 3 blank rows of cells to copy the previous 3 above into (but in a different order). I only did half the copy work and thought to save so as not to tempt fate too much - and right there the endless saving of the responsive grid started. I then tried (after rebooting etc) to add only 1 row of empty cells (no content at all) and on a test save I got the same endless responsive grid crash.

Temporarilly disabling the responsive grid option has enabled my to copy said rows and move content between then without problems.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the crashes but I will offer it anyway for your consideration:

I had previously successfully created an 12x8 cell row section to house a large video window. And all that went fine with the video displaying and playing without problem. It was after this that I started the adding the extra 3x12 cells for the products you can see above the video window in the image I have attached to this post called "YES Video". I hope that helps.

Again, I want the community to be able to follow (and contribute to) this issue. Please remove the private lock from my public post.

Hello,

Can I have my posts here returned to public from the priviate status you guys slapped on it? I do not want it private - though I can understand how you would want it so. There is nothing abusive in my posts here. The criticisms I make are very legitimate ones. So, again - return this "Hello Everyone" public thread to public status. Or are you now practicing Draconian censorship via the suppression of legitimate criticism?

Hi Gordon.

You should have recieved a request indicating that you can move your topic back to public. Also the private topic is utilized in order to be able to follow your case the best and fastest way possible, considering the technical nature of it. This also prevents potential unuseful posts to be inserted and thus sending your  topic down the waiting list.

If I understood correctly, you're getting the Updating Responsive Grid message after you added the empty rows to your project, but that is not actually an error message.

Since v12, the software is now in charger of calculating the space required for each object to fit the right way into the page.

This calculations though might take some time according to the kind of object that is inserted. Especially when adding empty space that do not affect in any way the website's layout, this calculations can take a very long time.

So first of all, I'd suggest you either remove the empty rows/columns, or even fill them with empty objects.

After doing this, if the problem was unclear to me or something else is happening too, please attach a screenshot of the way your page is built at step 3.

Hi Stefano,

I recall no invation to move my topic back to public. Please tell me exactly how I go about doing that as the topic is still set to private.

The "Updating Responsive Grid" progress box that gets displayed for ages which, being totally unacceptable, is impossible to get out of. Any attempt to do anything else produces a Windows error message that X5 is "not responding". That sure sounds like an error to me when I am forced to sit there twiddling my thumbs for ages when I should be getting on with my website development work.

To clarify: The new cell rows where not empty when I first tried to save my work. I had filled approximately half the cells with content and, as is my standard practice, I tried to save my work at that point before filling the remainder of the new cell rows with content. But I never got that far.

I left the "Updating Responsive Grid" progress bar run for quite a long time. I took a toilet break. I made a coffee. I paced about some. I sat twiddling my thumbs for another while. Then I gave up and tried to shut X5 down - but Windows couldn't manage that. At that point the whole PC is locked tight. Even the PC "Off" button could not shut the PC down. In the end I had to use the PC "Reset" button to bring the whole sorry tale to an end. So forgive me if I do not appreciate you telling me "that is not actually an error message".

On rebooting the PC I forgot about actually adding any content and did a quick test drive by just adding one new empty row of cells and trying to preview the effect. Again endless "Updating Responsive Grid" resulting in my PC going totally unresponsive. That stuff is a totally unacceptable bug in my humble opinion.

As previously stated elsewhere I got past the problem by temporarily disabling the responsive grid functionality. I was then able to add new cell rows and fill them with content without any problem. But I now worry that when full responsive functionality is restored that I may find myself with all sorts of problems further down the develepment timeline. Hopefully not. But all these crashes and hangs are seriously undermining my confidence in your product.

You said "Especially when adding empty space that do not affect in any way the website's layout, this calculations can take a very long time." That is what I would call a serious top-priority bug. Please fix it.

I will keep you updated on my next encounter with this problem.

Please advise meantime on how to restore this whole post thread to public status.

Regards,

Gordon.

Incomedia,

Thank you for the email with the two links for returning this post/thread to public status after you had previously set it to private.

Please be advised that your email was opened in the Thunderbird email client running on a Linux Mint 17.3 PC. The links were non-functional.

I had to open Firefox separately and paste your links into it before I could use them, and trust that this "public/private" aspect of the issues raised in thread is now resolved.

Onwards and upwards,

Gordon.

Hi Gordon.

Unfortunately it really is not a bug, but when responsive is on, the program has to do a lot of calculations to determine the correct size for one and each of the items you inserted. Having many empty cells though, causes the program to calculate a lot more as they count anyway as elements that need positioning.

At the moment, it is best to avoid having many blank spaces as, like I already stated, they do not affect in any way  the final layout of the website, and thus should not be left there.

Turning responsive on while working and then turning it on is a working escamotage to avoid this though.

Glad you found out how to turn your post back to public, and sorry for the incovenience.

Hope I've been helpful
