Connection error: it is not possible to complete the operation  en

My website X5 v12 updated a couple of days ago.

I can no longer upload my website to the internet or make changes.

Sometimes the following message displays:

Connection error: it is not possible to complete the operation (FTP_GetCurrentDirectory)

Sometimes the programme crashes, and sometimes I can see the files on my domain, but when I click on upload every single file has an error message.

Looking at previous posts I tried turning off passive FTP, but this does not help at all.

I have checked my domain with my provider, and all is well at that end.

Please advise me why the upload function is no longer working.

Thanks

Tim

Does v11 still work ?

Sounds very strange, else try a a full reinstall of x5, download full version here, your projects should be save but a backup can never hurt.....

You have free space on the server?
I had the same problem, and the error is that I had no free space on my hosting.

I deleted some files to make room and I solved the problem.

I have reinstalled v12 with and without updates, but cannot upload my work anymore.

The programme itself runs fine until I try to upload.

I have plenty of space on the server, thanks for the thought.

I don't want to try and upload with v11, as that would mean uploading an old version of my website, and I don't want old information back on the net.

Other thoughts?

You can make a folder on your webserver and upload in there with v11, if ok, then delete the folder.

Your own website will not be harmed and you will know if connection is good or not.

It could also be a connection somewhere else, did it work right after the update ? Else try tomorrow.

As an interim measure, save website to disk in an appropriate directory, then use filezilla (free) or similar to upload all those files to the public_html directory on your site.

If that works it confirms a configuration error or corruption in WX5

Thanks everybody.

Same problem with upload attempts for v11 and v12 of website X5.

I've tried reducing number of connections from 3 to 1 with no impact.

I've checked there is no inteference from virus protection and malware protection etc.

Broadband speed is decent.

Other downloads / uploads and streaming are working fine.

I've saved my website to disk, but I can't find a "public_html" directory on my site to upload the files to... I might need more of a step by step to check this out!

Hello Tim,

Check that you have entered the correct 'destination folder' in Step 5 of WebSite X5, and most importantly that you have the correct directory permissions set on the server.

Contrary to what you suggest in your opening post, I suspect the issue lies server side.

If you are using a secured connection, then try temporarily using plain FTP.

There is not always a folder called 'public_html' on the server.  This in itself is not a problem.  Just be sure that you have pointed WebSite X5 to the root folder of your project on the server.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi

I never specify a destination folder, and simply upload to the root directory, which has never proved an issue before... It normally just asks me to clarify the destination on the main upload screen (and still does - all ok up to here, until I start the upload).

If you're referring to the "server type" drop down option, then I always use plain FTP here anyway.

I have not changed any settings with my server, directory permissions are ok and as they have always been.

I've successfully uploaded files to my server in a temporary folder with no issue.

I'll try again a bit later in case there is an external factor I'm unaware of.

Thanks for the input.

But has your webhost?  Server updates happen regularly, and they can break things which worked previously.  If you haven't already comprehensively checked this out then it would be a good idea to do so.

We have had issues like this in the past where the problem appears to have been a temporary remote one.

Good luck!

...ok so I've had some success.

My broadband firewall (not my local firewall) was interfering.

I've managed to upload my website successfully, however a lot of files had an error message which took several republishing attempts before they were successful.

I'll look into this further.

Thanks for the help.

Tim
