HTML extraction problems after changing site contents.  en

When I make changes to existing photogalleries and/or Cellstyles it gives problems when extracting to HTML.

(Evolution 9)

It are all kind of problems after all kind of changes.

Examples:

- After deleting a photogallery as well as the corresponding photos on my computer, the program sometimes continues to extract the empty gallery to the HTML folder. Since the photo files are also deleted it creates empty documents and thumbnails files with display the message: Image Generation Error. Each time I extract I have 25 of those useless files in my extraction folder. Also deleting the page where the removed photo galery was located and recreate the page again does not solve the problem. X5 continues to generate the empty files of two non existing galleries that were deleted from the page.  In none of the HTML files there is a mentioning of the (deleted) photofiles it creates. It is like a ghost gallery, by the filenames I knew the files were coming from  my two deleted photo galleries.

- When not deleting but -changing- photogallerires, it extracts the image gallery to HTML but sometimes renames the photos, as a results in the [Gallery] folder after extration to HTML all original photos and thumbnailes are there, but also the duplicated ones that use names like: "DSC03939_thumb_0j680ess.jpg". When FTP to the server it will of course uploads all original and all duplicated files and this way the upload takes twice as long and after frequent updating the server gets polluted with the exact same files that are uploaded 5x but with 5 different system generated names, meaning upload takes 5x as long. I can manually delete the wrong files after each change, but that is not why I have automated software. Imagine how large the upload would be after years..

- Same for changing cellstyles, somtimes after changing, extracting to html, changing back, extracting to HTML, several cellstyles files are duplicated and have a new name. I use for example 1 specific cellstyle only 1x on the index page, so 1x file 19_bl.png is correct,  but after I extract it to HTML it now automatically creates 2x the exact same file: 19_bl.png and 19_bl_j5tt42q9.png. The first file can be deleted because the index.html only uses the second one with the long name.

- Sometimes changes are not correctly extracted to HTML, or dont work when online only in the preview. I am not using anymore the X5 internal FTP, ("only upload modified files") because that made it worse, and everything that stopped to work/display I have to manually FTP from filezilla to make it work or add because was missing.

I love the X5 software, but I am afraid of changing anything on the site. Since normally changes result in polution and other problems. After I made the changes and extract to HTML I first go through the IMAGE and GALLERY folders to delete all unneccesary created files, and then upload manually folder by folder, file by file to search for modificated ones by looking at timestamp. Time consuming, error sensitive, etc.

Please help solving this extractin to HTML problem.

Thanks.

In summary:

- Changes to photogalleries and cellstyles sometimes cause the program to duplicate the changed files. When I export the project to HTML and look in my [GALLERY] and [IMAGES] folders they are poluted with files that only exist 1x on my site but were duplicated 1x, 2x or 3x during the export process.

- There are files that were deleted from the project but after exporting to HTML keep existing 1x, 2x or 3x in the [IMAGES] and/or [GALLERY] folders.

- Using X5 internal FTP option "only upload modified files" does not always upload the correct modified files.

Website X5 does not automatically remove files that are no longer needed from your server.  To keep your server orderly and tidy it is a good idea to wipe all files and reupload your entire X5 project periodically.  Otherwise, redundant files may of course alternatively be manually removed from the server.

Beware also of a bug (as yet unresolved in X5) which reuploads old image files even when you have deleted them from within your X5 project.  Hopefully Incomedia will fix this soon as it is very annoying.  You can read more about it if you search the forum.

... but,

Website X5 will save images in his project file and load this on the server again, also when you have deleted on your PC, also when you have deleted on your server.

This is a problem by X5. And I hope it will be solved sometime.

Thanks! If it is a known bug then I feel reassured the problem will be solved in an upcoming release.

I know that website X5 does not automatically remove files from the server, this is also not a problem and something I do periodically myself. The problem happens before: during the extraction of the HTML code. ("Export the Website to Disk") Then it creates all kind of unneccesary ghostfiles. Some images from galeries are duplicatd 3x during the extaction pocess, while I only need/use 1...

The problem you both describe is indeed the problem I also experience, and in addition to that there are more problems:

- it does not only reupload deleted images, (have two full image galleries that were deleted but still get extracted),  it is worse: it first duplicates the deleted images three times and thèn extracts/upload three times the same file but with 3 different filenames.
- happens not only with deleted images but also with images that are still used, and especially X5 internal cellstyle png´s.

I have 1 cellstyle used a few times, and in my HTMLEXPORT folder it got extracted at least 60 times, all with 3byc7513, 126t3f4w, hl8we6s5 at the end of the filename. Would be nicer if it could point to one file only, but I think the same problem happened here where half is duplicated by WEbsite X5 bug, and the other half is just recreated for different pages because it cannot (??) point to the same original file.

Don´t think  many people get happy seeing attached screendump as a result..

(No, I don´t use a filenaming convention like this. Tongue out)
Makes cleaning up very difficult.

Hello L. Jansen,

Try to export the project file as IWZIP and then delete the project in the program. Once done reimport the project and then try to export to disk to see if it minimizes the duplicated files.

Please keep me updated.

Unfortunately did not solve the problem.

I first exported to IWZIP, then deleted the project in X5, and after reimported the project from the IWZIP.

If I now extract to HTML "Export the Website to Disk", the ghost files and duplicated images are still there.

Hello L. Jansen,

Thank you very much for your imformation.

The only other option would be to copy the pages in a new project so that in the new project it would only import the used files and not load the unused ones.

Many thanks!

Hello Claudio,

Will try this week. (need some time to perform this, with all pages, general and advanced settings, etc)

Will this problem be solved in a new X5 version? Because else the problem will keep reoccurring after I make frequent updates to the site. I live in Brazil, and our internet connection is slow and with frequent hickups, so would like to prevent huge transfers.

Thanks,
Lottie

Hello Lottie,

In the new version the files are handled differently because it uses an internal library and it keeps control of the used files. If a file is no longer used the program will not upload it and also after a new update, the program will only export all files if it's necessary, otherwise it will upload only the file you modified.

Many thanks!

Hi Claudio,

Can I ask which 'new version' you refer to?  Do you mean version 11, or the current version 10?

The reason I ask is because I have a v10 project (updated to 10.0.6.31) which still exhibits this 'ghost' file uploading behaviour.  In other words the program insists on uploading to my server files which were deleted months ago.

However, this paricular project was a v9 project which was imported into v10  -  could this be the reason why I still see redundant files being uploaded?  Do sites created from scratch in version 10 not suffer from this problem?

Hello Paul,

I was referring to Version 10 since Lottie has Version 9.

The issue can come from Version 9 since the files are included in the project and Version 10 is handling them like files needed by the project. In projects made in Version 10 this has been changed to avoid the upload of deleted files because the management of them is different and if the file has been deleted the program is no longer using it during the upload.

Many thanks!
