Number of databases needed for project?  en

Hi, I'm fairly new to creating a website with a member area, e-commerce and databases. Within my current (basic) subscription at One.com I can only use 1 database. Most likely I will have to make an upgrade.

In my website project for a local heritage society, I need the following:

  1. members area
  2. small e-commerce shop with login (if possible existing members should be able to use their existing login)
  3. searchable database of published articles
  4. searchable photodatabase

How many databases do I need? One per option or can they be combined?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know about a searchable database for pictures IMHO X5 has not a function like that, also the same for a members area.

but it's is what you want for the rest;

you want users to make there own login? Then you need a database If you do this yourself in x5 then not.

The standard search does not require a database.

If you want the products in your page to have exact stock items then you need another databse. if you set stock yourself in x5 then not.

Why don't you start setting it up easy without databases and then see where you end up, and after that see what you like to add.

It's better to start easy and build it up instead of starting with more complex functions.

Goodluck,

Thanks Andre, these are just one of the possibilities I have in mind.

I would like the project to be as userfriendly as possible... not just for myself but to (try and) give my visitors a "wow"-feeling.
Just trying to give them a new feel and experience to local heritage. I need the public to get acquainted with our website and get to know us while at home so I can tease them to visit our local heritage museum.

For the searchable database I have a list of already published magazine articles and would like to have people be able to browse, search or filter items in the database and get results.

After a lifetime working on lay-out for printing, I had to make the sideswitch to webdesign. Having flat and non-animated design in mind I'm always finding new possibilities of responsive design and coming up with new ideas. So every help or suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks again for the info.

Hello Paul

X5 is not suitable for a photo-database.

I will suggest You use X5 as a container and then include a member-system as ADMIDIO which is an excellent system for your need. ADMIDIO is free and open software - it is very good.

I am makinh a site for someone that need a system for 3D models to show and only for members to download.

The site is made in the v. 13 PRO.

You can see it here ( it is under construction ) : http://www.energifremtiden.dk/c4d/index.html

You can see some of the models ( could be photos ) here : http://www.energifremtiden.dk/c4d/tiere-1.html

You click on the thumbnail and in the frame You see it in full-size.

I have a search function here : http://www.energifremtiden.dk/c4d/search.html

For this search function I have used REPORTICO - a free and open report-tool with many functions. You can click GO and then search in the "search" field OR Before You click GO You can select one or more categories. REPORTICO has the ability to "join" tables and select on one or more of the joined tables. It is a strong tool.

I have another site ( made for a museum ). this is made in Evolution 12.

You can see it here : http://www.brammingegnsmuseum.dk/

On one of the pages I have used the database-object for X12 to show photos. You can see it here :

http://www.brammingegnsmuseum.dk/glasplader.html

This site is in Danish, so You will probably not understand much, but it should clearly show the possibility to show photos. The information with the link is in the database - the photos themselves is uploaded as normal files.

I will suggest You use the ADMIDIO software. You should use the web-link function here. Then You can have the photos and the links to articles shown in the same way - and You can search in both the photos and the articles when You use the web-link function.

Hope this is an inspiration for You, and that You will find a solution.

Kind regards

John S.
