Logo in header is distorted

I can't figure out why there is a black type line around parts of the logo in the header. The original image is a transparent gif, 771px width and 216px in height. I'm adding it to the header as an image and then manually scaling to fit it in the parameters needed in the template. Am I doing something incorrectly to cause this black line? Use a suitable paint package to save the transparent gif as a transparent png.
If you don't have a suitable program, add the gif as an attachment and I or someone else with convert it for you and put it back on this post.
