V8 To V9 Error pages html  en

I have converted some of my V8 websites to V9 and read and took note of the information given when converting websites. I use Google analytics and webmaster stats on my sites. Now I am getting crawl errors on a lot of pages. I appears that when converting a project the page names have not been converted correctly. e.g. I have a page named Alpaca Sales In version 8 the space was converted to an underscore (_). So the url of that page was www.argentonalpacas/alpaca_sales.html. Obviously, this is what the Google stats will pick up. In version 9 the spaces have been converted to hyphens (-). So now the url for the page is www.argentonalpacas/alpaca-sales.html. I can't believe that a fundamental error has been made by Incomedia or this added to the conversion information. Am I doing something wrong, if so how can I correct it as obviously, it affects my stats, any website that has my link and customers I have given urls to.

Hi Tony,

you can see this mini-guide about the conversion:

www.websitex5.com/v8tov9

than you control to have the latest version of the Evolution 8 (8.0.16) and the Evolution 9(9.0.2.1699).

You can modify the pages file name in the step 2, "Page Propeties", "Name of file generated".

But why are the pages generated automatically with a hyphen as default when in version 8 they were converted into underscores?  It does not mention anything about this in the guide and YES I do have the latest versions of both V8 and V9.

It seems that this is a very serious error.  It should be corrected immediately and warning issued to everyone who has converted V8 websites to V9. It means now that I will have to edit each page heading and republish the website.   This is bound to create confusion for visitors to my websites who have booked marked pages only to find they not longer are found.

For the SEO the hyphen is betterto replacethe spaces.

The Only alternative is to replace the "-" with the "_" in "step 2", "Page Propeties", "Name of file generated".

Depending on which server you are using the "SPACE" is interpretted as either an underscore as you say......... or they use HTML (Twenty percent)

It should be that an underscore should be used at all times as Tony says above, you only need to look at the search engine results to see that the main titles are seperated by underscores and NOT hyphens!!

Thanks Frank.  Riccardo - please look at this video : http://www.ecreativeim.com/blog/2011/03/seo-basics-hyphen-or-underscore-for-seo-urls/

Although it does make the point that hyphens are better than underscores it also makes the point that if you already have a website with underscores, don't change it.

It is clear from blogs and the video itself that Google are looking at using underscores as separators in the future.  It makes more sense to use underscores due to how the hosts system interprets it.  SEO rankings can be changed by many other things.  Hyphens as separators would have a problem here in France as place names have hyphens as part of the name to join the words distinct from those place names who have a space between words.

Besides this the point is that you do not mention this issue in any of the information and even now you are not telling people of the massive issue.  Bookmarks on V8 websites pages will not work on V9 websites.

The alternative is not to have to manually replace each page title as you suggest but for you to change the code and restore it as it was in V8.

And now I have found that google search results are bouncing because they trawled my pages when there were underscores in the Page Names!

Hi,

you can write a post in "idea" categories with this.

for now, you can replace the "-" with the "_" in "step 2", "Page Propeties", "Name of file generated".

Yes Richardo I do know that I can change the hyphen for underscore.  This shouldn't be put in idea category because plainly it is a bug (actually it is bad program management by Incomedia).  There is no way you should have changed the way that page names were created without asking the X5 community first.  You have no right to do this and please don't tell me you did it because it is best practice on the internet.  It is not best practice to make fundamental changes without approval.  This is nothing to do with program enhancement.  I bet most of the people converting their projects from V8 don't appreciate the problem.

You should rush out a fix so that when importing a V8 project page names with spaces are automatically changed to underscores by default with a checkbox to allow hyphens should the user choose to.

From your Article:

The short answer is that you should use a hyphen for your SEO URLs.

Ifyou want yoursite to beindexedwellbyseo you need to use the hyphen.

I understand why hyphens are better than underscores, that is why I sent you the link.  But the article also said if you already have underscores do not change them.  However, the major issue that I have is that you changed the format of the page name which has caused a problem with links and ratings (the old pages have are no longer in Google's listing so have gone down in ratings).  Not only that but you did not inform anyone that this was happening.  The least you could do is to issue a note to all users.
