Program often crashes on preview plus extra symbol inserted before £ symbol  en

I am having a problem with the program freezing when I preview. Not all the time but enough to be driving me crazy. I have attempted the solution offered in other posts (remove Net framework, remove X5, clean up Net, re-install X5) but still happening.

Also, the £ symbol in Project List Objects is preceded by à when vied with Firefox but appears correctly in preview.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Does the crashes happens only in one project or also if you start a new one?

Is it happening with a specific object as example video files?

For the à symbol you see this depends on the encoding used on the hosting server where the page is not sent as UTF-8 encoded and you need to contact your hosting provider to ask how to change the encoding to UFT-8 and then it will appear correctly.

Many thanks!

Hello Claudio

It is more a freeze than a crash and it happens regularly. I notice CPU usage sticks on 100% when it happens (strange because the computer is more than powerful enough). I have left it for more than 30 minutes before rebooting. I have even tried starting from scratch (3 times) but no success. I have the hyperthread setting to 1, makes no difference. There are no video objects in the project yet, just text, product objects and images. I have noticed it does not happen as often if I save before preview but even then, it still happens quite a few times. When I reboot it always says the project is still open or was not closed correctly and it sometimes takes a couple of attempts to get the project back because it loads an older version the on first reboot.

As for the other matter regarding UTF-8, I have not uploaded the site yet. This extra symbol is being generated from the saved website folder on my computer and I have tried viewing the site on other computers but it is still there.

Thanks for any help,

Adam

Hello Adam,

This symbol appears if it is not used the correct encoding and once you uploaded it and the hosting server is set to use UTF-8 as econding, generally the most supports it automatically, all pages will be showed correctly with alls symbols.

About the freezes, Can you please tell me what Windows version you are using?

Many thanks!

Hi Claudio,

Thanks for he reply.

I a using windows 7, all updates  installed, graphics drivers up to date, etc.

I am still using Website X5 and think the program, apart from these problems, is brilliant.

I have found a work around. I read on another post about problems with Norton firewall so I turned off my Firewall (AVG Business edition) and it seems to have helped. Why this should help I don't know because the firewall is not blocking X5. I have also set number of open threads to 1 and got into the habit of saving before previewing or adding images and galleries. All these things together have at least made the program usable. The program now freezes only occasionally but it would be nice if it didn't do it at all.

many thanks,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Please try to repair the .NET Frameworks to see if this helps to stop the freezes:

To repair the .NET Frameworks 3.5 and 4 you need as first to use following cleanup tool to remove .NET 4:
http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
Once done go to Control Panel then choose Programs and Features and then click on Turn Windows features on or off. Clear the check box for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 and then click on OK. After Windows disables the feature you will need to go back to re-enable Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1
This procedure can take some time to deactivate and activate .NET 3.5.1 and once done reinstall .NET 4 after downloading it from following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718

About the firewall this is probably blocking the preview, since it simulates an internet connection, and since it is locally the adresses are not verified for the firewall.

Probably this could be the issue and you could try to set a rule to allow the preview browser to work without beeing checked by the firewall so you don't need to deactivate it.

Many thanks!

Hi again,

I have already tried repairing the .NET Frameworks. Before messaging you I looked through previous posts for the problem and it was the first thing I tried. I will repair it again this afternoon and let you know the results ASAP.

I have also already set a rule in my firewall exceptions and I am assuming it has worked because it hasn't gotten any worse since.

Judging by other posts I have read on this problem, it seems some systems struggle running this program even after repairing .Net Framework. I am surprised by the amount of CPU usage this program is using sometimes 100% and that's usually when it freezes (no matter how long I wait). I run the latest CAD and video rendering programs on this machine and never have problems and nowhere near the same amount of CPU usage. I have to leave the open threads setting at 1 because the problem gets worse the higher this setting is. Surely this shouldn't be the case on this machine.

Anyway, I will let you know the result of the .NET repair later.

Thanks,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Usually this happens or because the OS or parts like the .NET Frameworks are not working correctly or some programs interfers with it.

Please let me know if repairing the .NET Framework helped.

Many thanks!

Hi again Claudio,

OK, I have repaired the .NET again but no success. It still freezes occasionally but nothing I can't live with. Strange thing is I got this message once I had done the repair. I  rebooted and have not sen it again:

an error occurred while running this program.
Please reinstall the program.
(thread was being aborted.)

So, it's no worse than beore but I like the program that much that I will carry on anyway and as long as I remember to keep backing up my work, then no real problem.

Hopefully a future update or when I change to windows 8 (in 2 months) will sort it out. I appreciate your problem, it must be a nightmare writing a program that wll run faultless on every different kind of system out there, and I appreciate your efforts.

Regards

Adam

Hello Adam,

Probably you got the message because the program could not find the .NET Framework because it needed a reboot to work correctly.

If you notice this freezes happens with a specific object we can try to sort it out.

Many thanks!
