Misalignment of text  en

I bought websitex5 specifically because of the misalignment of objects in some browsers with my previous program. One of the main features of website x5 is claimed to be: "Thanks to the new text editor and integrated web fonts in the project, you now have complete control over your texts and can use whichever font you prefer, knowing it will always be displayed correctly on any device."

Yesterday I finished rebuilding the first of my sites; today I received this screenshot from the owner of the site showing that the problem is worse than ever.

Can anyone help, please?

Hello Anne,

I feel your display issue is down to the choice of font you've used in your project.  When designing for compatibility it's best to stick to what are known as 'web-safe' fonts, which most users will already have on their systems/browsers.

Have a read at this WebSite X5 document, which should hopefully make everything clearer:

http://help.websitex5.com/en/v11/evo/index.html?web_font_def.htm

Try changing the font on your page to any of the following:

Arial, Courier New, Georgia, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Verdana

Then upload your site again and have the owner of the site test it.

Alternatively you can make use of the great new feature in your version 11: Google fonts, which will display exactly as intended across all browsers!  In fact, that is what your quote is referring to:

"Thanks to the new text editor and integrated web fonts in the project, you now have complete control over your texts and can use whichever font you prefer, knowing it will always be displayed correctly on any device."

You need to use the new integrated web fonts if you want to benefit from correct display on any device.

Kind regards,

Paul

Thanks for such a helpful reply. I've switched to Arial and am waiting to hear whether that's solved the problem.

Meanwhile, I'm confused - surely Trebuchet and Palatino (which are the ones I was using on the site) are universal fonts? They're marked as such on the websitex5 drop-down text selector menu.

Yes, but even the WebSite X5 documentation defines a Safe Font as:

"...fonts that are present on practically all devices and so do not require any publication."

The key here is whether or not the web visitor (and in this case the site owner) has those particular fonts installed on their computer, and how their browser reacts when asked to display text a certain way.

Your site looked absolutely fine on my machine on all browsers even before you changed the font to Arial, as I assume it did on your own.  There must be something different about the configuration of your client's computer compared to ours.

The issue might not even be due to font choice, but I have a strong hunch that it is.  In particular I have my doubts about the Palatino font.  I wouldn't call that universal as such, but I would definitely say Arial is.

I look forward to hearing whether or not a change of font has cured the problem.

Remember too the many benefits of the new web fonts/Google fonts!  They alone can guarantee 100% compatibility.

Fingers crossed!

Paul

Thanks, Paul, you were right – changing to Arial has solved the problem.

I'm now enjoying playing around with Google fonts . . .
