I have somehow created two web sites withe same name, the only difference being that one has http;//www and the other simply has http:// without the www. Any ideas on how that is possible ?

This is actually thesame, exceptyou have created asub-directorywithwwwon the server andenteredthe home pagein the rootandin the subdirectory.
The callwith orwithout wwwends upin the sameplace,unless it isallowedon the server withoutwww.
