European General Data Protection Regulation  en

I have just received an email from Website X5 that says, "Privacy and Security - On May 25, 2018, the GDPR (the European General Data Protection Regulation) came into effect. Everyone is obliged to conform to the GDPR and the Cookie Law, with no exceptions"

While my website does conform. I do not reside in any part of Europe, nor does my site reside on European servers. So even if it did not comply I cannot see how any European law can have any jurisdiction over me, since we do not have a one world government (yet). It's not like they can summon me to court.

If my site didn't comply, the worst they can do is block its use.

Rod - I agree.

I am totally sick of cookie disclaimers blocking half or all the screen on mobile sites and frequently much of a desktop demanding I accept the conditions. This overbearing approach is unacceptable. I do not include the disclaimer because I do not wish to confuse my customers - you would be surprised at the number of people who ring, sms or email me to ask if it is ok to click yes or close the pop-up on various sites (I am in Oz too).

Thank you. I'm glad I'm not alone. I hate cookie/privacy alerts too. Really it's a nanny state over precaution for those who don't have a clue about how the internet works. Thankfully it looks like the EU will be collapsing soon and all this will hopefully go away. (Wishful thinking) smile

I did find a Firefox addon that should get rid of the "cookie alert" but it didn't work very well.

Being told "It's the law - no exception" is not in the least bit remotely true outside the EU. Any complience to an EU law outside the EU is merely a goodwill gesture. My responsibility is to keep to the laws of my country.

I got the same email. It also said that "my websites might stop working properly" and that I should update to the latest version of X5 to avoid all this....and gave me a special deal.

Incomedia, I ALREADY have the latest version and have Update Protection....surely your database has this information and I shouldn't get this particular email?

This is lazy and intrusive marketing.

Hi Rod,

thank you for your message.

I can see you already own WebSite X5 17, i.e. the latest version, so you don't have to worry: you probably simply got this newsletter by mistake, as it was meant to inform the users of much older versions. We are sorry about this, especially if this has caused any troubles, we didn't mean to.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. Kind regards.
